Nancy's Notes - July 17, 2008
I saw an article in the Des Moines Register yesterday telling about a new service offered at the Des Moines area libraries. Patrons can download audio books onto an i-pod for free. Well I want you to know they have nothing on us. We’ve been able to do this for quite some time through a group purchase with North Central Regional Library. If you have a library card we can give you the web site and you are able to select from hundreds of titles. They can be downloaded to either an i-pod/MP3 player, burned to a cd, or downloaded to you computer hard- drive.
We have had great crowds for our summer programs. The first week those involved had a great time but we only had around 60 participants since it was so close to July 4. The past two weeks we have had over 100 children plus several guardians. Bob Bohm was the presenter the second week. You may have seen him at the Wright County Fair. He wowed the kids by pulling a parrot out of a coat. Last week we had Fax Gilbert who worked a lot with mime and also had some tricks up his sleeve. Many of the children got a chance to entertain along with Fax. This week Charlie from Wright County Conservation presented a program on bugs and the food chain. He always does a nice job with the kids.
John Connolly’s “The Reapers”, is a novel about a chain of killings. It begins as Louis, a young boy, witnesses an unspeakable crime that involves a member of his small, southern town. Years later the sins of his life are reaching into his present bringing with them buried secrets. Someone is now hunting him, targeting his home, his businesses, and his partner, Angel. When Louis and Angel mysteriously disappear their friends are forced to band together to find them. They are led by private detective Charlie Parker, a killer himself, a Reaper in waiting.
James Patterson remains a favorite of our readers. He recently co-wrote “Sail” with Howard Roughan. A perfect family vacation turns into a nightmare. Barely out of sight of land, the Dunne family finds its summer getaway to paradise is turning into the trip form hell. Katherine Dunne had hoped this trip would bring back the togetherness they’d lost when her husband died four years earlier. Suddenly a disaster hits. Faced with real danger, the Dunnes rediscover the meaning of family and pull together in a way they haven’t in a long time. But this catastrophe is just a tiny taste of the danger, someone wants to make sure that the Dunne family never makes it out of paradise alive.
Every woman has a secret, but how far will she go to make sure it stays secret. Abbey, Tiffany, and Loreen are each in need of thousands of dollars. Tiffany’s sister, Sandra, has the perfect idea. It’s fast, it’s easy, it’s legal, and it’s the secret that kept her shoe addiction alive. Three very different women bond together in “Secrets of a Shoe Addict” when they find themselves in more than one kind of trouble.
Come in and check something out: Monday through Wednesday between noon and 8:00 or Thursday through Saturday between 10:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.
