Nancy's Notes - January 20, 2010

"Ford County" by John Grisham, "The Recipe Club" by Andrea Israel and Nancy Garfinkel, "The Final Detail" by Harlan Coben

I hate to keep reminding you, but the weather pattern seems to repeat itself fairly often this year. If the weather is very inclement, give us a call and check to see if we're open before you head out on treacherous roads.

John Grisham's newest book, "Ford County", is a collection of short stories. Grisham takes readers back to Ford County, Mississippi, which was the setting for his very first novel.  Grisham writes about a cast of characters including Inez Graney and her two older sons who take a bizarre road trip through the Mississippi Delta to visit her youngest son who is locked away on death row. There is also Mack Stafford a divorce lawyer who gets an offer to settle some old, forgotten cases for more money than he has ever seen. Sidney is a data collector for an insurance company who perfects his blackjack skills in hopes of bringing down the casino empire.  There are three good ol' boys from rural Ford County who take a journey to the city of Memphis to give blood to an injured friend. Completing the cast is Gilbert, who arrives at the retirement home with an ability to sniff out the assets of the "seniors".

Andrea Israel and Nancy Garfinkel are co-authors of "The Recipe Club". It is a story of friendship and includes more than 80 recipes.   In childhood, "LillyPad" and "ValPal" form a two-person club where they share their deepest secrets and recipes. You can cook along with the young women as they travel through time sharing joys and heartbreak. The Recipe Club sustains Lilly and Val's bond throughout decades, regardless of what different paths they take. Now, years later, while trying to recapture the trust they've lost, Lilly and Val reunite only to uncover a shocking secret.

Harlan Coben has completed the sixth novel in his Myron Bolitar series. Entitled "The Final Detail", it is a mystery filled with betrayal, family secrets, and murder. Myron Bolitar is a sports agent and sleuth who has long needed a vacation. He finds a tropical beach where he begins to clear his head after the death of a close friend. It almost works until his friend, Win, shows up with a message that takes him back to reality.  Esperanza, Myron's partner at MB Sportsrep, has been arrested for the murder of a client, a fallen baseball star attempting a comeback.
