Nancy's Notes - July 18, 2013

"Sisterland" by Curtis Sittenfeld “Widow Of Gettysburg” by Jocelyn Green

Around fifty participants enjoyed craft day last week. After a quick story the kids made dinosaurs, fossils, thumbprint bugs, painted with vegetables, and ate dirt cups (cookies and gummy worms). Our “Digging into Reading” theme has been great fun so far!

From an early age, Kate and her identical twin sister, Violet, knew that they were unlike everyone else. Kate and Vi were born with peculiar “senses”, psychic abilities concerning future events and other people’s secrets. Though Vi embraced her visions, Kate did her best to hide them. Now, years later, their different paths have led them both back to their hometown of St. Louis. Vi has pursued a career as a psychic medium, while Kate has settled down in the suburbs to raise her two young children. But when a minor earthquake hits in the middle of the night, the normal life Kate has enjoyed begins to shift. After Vi goes on television to share a premonition that another, more devastating earthquake will soon hit the St. Louis area, an embarrassed Kate is mortified, and yet fearful that Vi may be right.

We recently purchased “Widow Of Gettysburg” a novel from Jocelyn Green’s “Heroine Behind the Lines” series. When the Battle of Gettysburg encompasses Liberty Holloway’s farm, her home is turned into a Confederate field hospital. While Liberty's future crumbles as her home is destroyed, the past comes rushing back to Bella, a former slave and Liberty's hired help, when she finds herself surrounded by Southern soldiers, one of whom knows the secret that would place Liberty in danger if revealed. In the wake of the war, Liberty and Bella struggle to pick up the pieces the battle has left behind.
