This article will be short and sweet since I was out of town for a few days last week and I need to beat the deadline. While we were traveling I was reading "If I Stay" by Gayle Forman. This is the latest young adult novel tht has been recently released in theaters. Like "The Fault of the Stars", the last teen book produced on film, the story revolves around health issues.
This is the story of Mia a young music prodigy who has it all. She is about to be accepted at Julliard, has a good looking and popular boyfriend, and a family she loves. All that changes in a matter of minutes when her family's care is hit by a truck and all but Mia are killed instantly. It is written with Mia's physical body lying in a coma while her soul is observing the reaction of others by traveling throughout the hospital. The book flip-flops back and forth as Mia reflects on the relationships she has had with family and friends in the past. Seeing the reactions of those close to her while remembering the past she must decide whether she is ready to let go and join her family or fight to stay on earth and construct a new life. Here's a hint, there is a sequel.
