Nancy's notes - September 11, 2014
Becky has selected “The Light Between Oceans" as the book for the September library book club. After four years on the Western Front, Tom Sherbourne returns to Australia and takes a job as the lighthouse keeper on Janus Rock, nearly half a day’s journey from the coast. He brings his young wife, Isabel to the isolated island where the supply boat comes once a season. Years later, after two miscarriages and one stillbirth, the grieving Isabel hears a baby’s cries on the wind. A boat has washed up onshore carrying a dead man and a living baby. Tom, who keeps meticulous records, wants to report the man and infant immediately. But Isabel insists the baby is a “gift from God,” and against Tom’s judgment, they claim her as their own and name her Lucy. The book club meets over the noon hour on the fourth Thursday of each month. It is open to any interested parties.
Katy Simpson Smith has written, “The Story of Land and Sea”, her debut novel. Set in a small coastal town in North Carolina during the waning years of the American Revolution the book follows three generations of family; fathers and daughters, mother and son, master and slave. Each character yearns for deliverance amidst war, kidnapping, slavery, and love.
Sherryl Woods has become quite popular with our readers. She is back with “Swan Point”, the story of divorce Adelia Hernandez. Determined to build a new life for her family she moves them to Swan Point where she will become the manager of a popular boutique. Adelia is ready for a fresh start and her independence until she crosses paths with Gabe Franklin.
