Nancy’s Notes

Drake University Press, in collaboration with Carol Spaulding-Kruse and Kelsey Lepperd, recently published, The Ones I bring With Me.  In the book young Latinas share their stories about growing up Latina in Iowa with an emphasis on the importance of education as a path to achieve their dreams. Our local AAUW group has been meeting with teenage Latino girls from Clarion and Belmond.  Some of the girls participated in the research for the book by discussing their relationships, role models, family and cultural influences. The group is mentioned in the acknowledgement so you may be    interested in reading our copy.
Who is more prolific than Danielle Steel. (This is a rhetorical question). She is back with Power Play. Even though Harvard-educated Fiona Carson has proven herself as CEO of National Technology Advancement, a multibillion-dollar high-tech company, she still has to meet the challenges of her world every day. Devoted single mother and tough negotiator, Fiona weighs every move she makes, and reserves any personal time for her children. Isolation and constant pressure are givens for her as a woman in a man’s world. Marshall Weston basks in the rewards from his achievements. Smooth, shrewd, and irreproachable, Marshall is a model chief executive, and the power is his drug of choice. To maintain his position, he harbors secrets that could destroy his life at any moment. His world is one of high risks .Like many women in her position, Fiona has sacrificed her personal life for her career, while Marshall dances close to the edge and flirts with scandal every day. Both must face their own demons, and fight off those who are jealous of their success. Their lives as CEOs of major companies come at a high price. And just how high a price are they willing to pay?
We just received the fourth novel in a trilogy by Jeffrey Archer. Yes, I know what trilogy means, but I guess as long as they sell a series can go on forever and I have enjoyed the other three books. Now Archer brings us, Be Careful What You Wish For. In the latest installment of the Clifton Chronicles Ross Buchanan is forced to resign as chairman of the Barrington Shipping company. Emma Clifton wants to replace him but Don Pedro Martinez intends to install his puppet, Major Alex Fisher, in order to destroy the Barrington family firm.
