New on the Shelf
"Educated: A Memoir" by Tara Westover. The child of survivalists living in the mountains of Idaho, Tara was a teenager the first time she stepped into a classroom. No formal education, no hospitals, no help from the outside world for anything. Tara wanted more, so she taught herself mathematics, grammar, and gaining admittance to Brigham Young University. Going from next to no education to Harvard and Cambridge in her search for knowledge, and wondering after it all could she still go home?
"The French Girl" by Lexie Elliott. Six friends from Oxford spending a week in a French farmhouse in what should have been the perfect summer vacation. At least, that is what Kate Channing thought, until Severine showed up. The beautiful local girls’ presence throwing the already shaky group dynamics into total disarray was bad enough, until Severine disappeared from the face of the earth. A decade later the case is being reexamined after Severine’s body is found in a well behind the farmhouse. Now Kate and her friends are facing questions with dangerous answers.
"Andrew Jackson and the Miracle of New Orleans" by Brian Kilmeade and Don Yaeger. In 1812 the fledgling United States faced the British once again in a bid for control of the mouth of the Mississippi River. Whoever controlled the city of New Orleans would control the flow of commerce along the river and into the young nation. While the capture of the city seemed a simple matter to the British, the formidable General Andrew Jackson looked tailor made to foil their plans. Kilmeade and Yaeger follow the development of Jackson through many formative events to one of the most incredible battles in American history.
