"The Friend" by Sigrid Nunez. "Wrestling with the Devil" by Ngugi wa Thiong’o. "The Last Equation of Isaac Severy" by Nova Jacobs.

New On the Shelf

The Friend by Sigrid Nunez.  The last thing she expected to be left with when her best friend died was a dog.  Now she has to navigate her own grief alongside a Great Dane suffering from the sudden disappearance of its master.  On top of the emotional aspect there is also the very real physical situation, how does one live with a huge dog in an apartment where dogs are banned.  As dog and woman become a lifeline to each other, can they be a stabilizing influence when both are close to coming completely undone?

Wrestling with the Devil by Ngugi wa Thiong’o.  Beginning a half hour before his release from prison on December 12th 1978, Ngugi recalls the events that lead to his incarceration in Kenya’s Kamiti Maximum Security Prison.  In a prison block alongside other political prisoners, Ngugi searched for the strength to withstand the humiliation and isolation forced upon him.  As an act of defiance, he writes a novel in secret on toilet paper, a novel eventually published as Devil on the Cross

The Last Equation of Isaac Severy by Nova Jacobs.  Days after his apparent suicide, a letter from Isaac Severy is delivered to his granddaughter Hazel.  The letter tasks Hazel with delivering his last mathematical equation to a trusted colleague, and keeping it out of the hands of shadowy secret organization.  The only other problem is that she has to find it first.  Hazel must unravel a series of clues to find the equation, stay ahead of the others searching for it, and keep her gifted but dysfunctional extended family out of trouble.
