New On the Shelf

Hotel Silence by Audur Ava Olafsdottir.  Jonas Ebeneser is a man who doesn’t know who he is anymore.  He isn’t a husband anymore, and according to his now ex-wife he never was a father, at least biologically.  Perhaps, Jonas decides, this is a good time to end things, now he just has to decide how and where.  Traveling to a ravaged city in a war torn country with only the clothes on his back and a toolbox that might be useful, Jonas finds himself unsure of whether it is an end he’s found or a beginning.

The Female Persuasion by Meg Wolitzer.  College freshman Greer Kadetsky is coming to realize the world is a much bigger place than she previously thought.  Her life, her longtime boyfriend Cory, her plans for the future, all getting a new look through changed eyes after meeting Faith.  A prominent figure in the women’s movement for years, Faith Frank has the charisma and poise of any other three people put together.  When she offers her experience to help Greer explore her developing sense of purpose, the younger woman must decide who and what she wants to be.

The Good Pilot Peter Woodhouse by Alexander McCall Smith.  They make a strange, but appropriate, group; Val the land girl, Mike the American airman, and Peter Woodhouse the rescued dog.  Peter takes to the airbase as like he was born to it and soon becomes the mascot of the American squad, flying with Mike.  When Mike and Peter are shot down over Holland, both are feared lost.  Surviving through luck and help from the Danish underground and Ubi, a German officer, Mike and Peter wait out the war.
