New On the Shelf

Fade to Black by Heather Graham.  Marnie Davante has the dubious privilege of once starring in a cult TV show.  For good or ill, that early career choice could now help her achieve her dream of starting a children’s theatre, so now she is on the convention circuit gathering both money and support.  But things go sideways when a costar is murdered in front of Marnie and the kill seems to vanish without a trace.  The child of famous actors, PI Bryan McFadden stays as far as he can get from Hollywood, but this business with Marnie quickly draws him in despite his wishes to the contrary.  Is the killer simply an obsessed fan, or is there more going on behind the scenes? Moreover, how can Bryan keep Marnie safe from and unknown assailant with a mysterious agenda?

Us Against You by Fredrick Backman.  The people of Beartown have gone through quite a bit recently, and the coming loss of their local hockey team seems like being hit while they are down.  The satisfaction of the former Beartown players, now members of the rival team from Hed, just makes the whole miserable affair worse.  With tension rising between the towns and the teams, a newcomer steps into the head coaching position for Beartown’s hockey team.  The Beartown team could come together into something special, but the tension in both communities seems set to tear anything apart.  One final upcoming game could result in some small measure of closure and stability, or it could rip both towns apart and taint a beloved pastime forever.

Pain Killer by Barry Meier.  First sold in 1996 as a treatment for cancer patients and those with chronic pain, OxyContin was hailed as a defense against abuse with its time-release formula.  Unsurprisingly quickly people figured out a way around the time-release and a new addiction began to flourish.  Beginning with the true story of addiction from a high-school cheerleader, Pain Killer then delves into legitimate pain management issues, prescription drug addiction, and the use of scientific results to push corporate profits.
