New On the Shelf

In His Father’s Footsteps by Danielle Steel.  Spared the terrible fate of too many in the camps when U.S. troops take Germany, Jakob and Emmanuelle soon find themselves on their way to New York to start a new life.  Their friendship turns to love, and together they make a marriage and a home on the Lower East Side.  Through hard work and talent, Jakob finds success in the diamond business and real estate investment, showing his son Max that America is truly a land of opportunity.  After graduating Harvard Max looks set to join the ranks of his high society friends, and of course marry his perfect wife.  While his lavish lifestyle may be outside of anything his parents would have imagined, they are happy for their son making a life for himself.  But when that life begins to fall apart, and his perfect wife is shown to be far from the woman he thought she was, Max must truly learn what it is like to follow in his father’s footsteps through struggle and hardship.

The Glass Ocean by Beatriz Williams, Lauren Willig, and Karen White.  With her finances in disarray and bereft of ideas for her next book, author Sarah Blake is at her wits end.  Desperation leads her to the old chest belonging to her great-grandfather, who died when the Germans sank the RMS Lusitania, the chest she swore to her Alzheimer’s suffering mother that she would stay away from.  The contents of the chest could rewrite accepted history, if it can be verified.  Sarah makes for England to gain the assistance of John Langford, the disgraced Member of Parliament, whose family archives may just have the key to her information and that long ago disaster.

The Mystery of Three Quarters by Sophie Hannah.  In Large Print.  The last thing Hercule Poirot expected to come home to after a pleasant luncheon was a woman berating him for accusing her of murder.  Having never met her or heard of the man she says she is accused of murdering, Poirot is understandably confused and concerned.  When three more people step forward with letters allegedly from Hercule Poirot accusing them of the murder of Barnabas Pandy, Poirot must dig into the case and determine the truth of the matter.  To all appearances Pandy fell asleep in the bath and his death was ruled an accident, so why the murder accusations, and why use Poirot’s name on the letters?  Poirot will need the assistance of his Scotland Yard friend, Edward Catchpool, and all of his little grey cells to untangle the web of this mystery.
