New On the Shelf

Desperate Measures by Stuart Woods.  Fresh from a jaunt to Europe, Stone Barrington is back in the states and already himself tangled up with a woman.  Hiring the gorgeous woman seems like an ideal fit for Stone, but when has his life ever been that simple.  New York City is shaken by a series of crimes both disturbing and methodical, and Stones’ new assistant looks to be next.  Stone will have to protect the woman who may be next on the criminals’ list and track down the scum before they can strike again.  His vigilance will be sorely tested, and if all else fails there is always a little luck.

Echoes of Evil by Heather Graham.  Brodie McFadden is trying to decide what to do with his life, he has an invitation to join his brothers and the Krew of Hunters, a special paranormal investigation unit of the FBI.  To clear his mind, Brodie joins an old navy buddy for some sun and diving at a historic shipwreck where the main attraction ends up being a brand new corpse.  Dakota McCoy, Kody to her friends, has sunk quite a bit of her time and effort into her Key West culture festival, hoping it will succeed.  She feels a deep connection to her home, and the ghosts that haunt it.  However, things aren’t looking good when a local musician drops dead in the middle of a performance at the festival.  Brodie believes the festival, or perhaps something else worth killing for links the two deaths.

The Deal of a Lifetime by Fredrik Backman.  It has been years since father and son have seen one another, and a cold winter’s night seems somehow appropriate for them to meet again.  The father shares the story of a brave little girl, who knows crayons can’t beat cancer but it makes the adults feel better about things.  Talking about the girl allows the father to also talk about himself, what he has and hasn’t done, the ups and downs of his life.  There is a decision to be made, that may just save not just the life of a child, but the relationship of a father and son.
