New On the Shelf

The Reckoning by John Grisham.  “I have nothing to say.”  Those were the only words Pete Banning would speak about his crime.  Pete was a decorated hero in World War II, head of a prominent family, well liked, and a regular and faithful member of the Methodist church.  Pete Banning was held up as the best of Clanton, Mississippi, which makes his seemingly cold-blooded murder of Reverend Dexter Bell even more puzzling.  Pete makes no defense of himself or his actions, content to take his reasons to his grave, but his defense attorney is determined to get to the core of this terrible act and save Pete from himself.

Vendetta by Iris Johansen.  Jude Brandon has a mission from a dying man, Carl Venable, head of the CIA terrorism taskforce has charged Brandon with the safety of his daughter at any cost.  Rachel Venable has her own past to contend with, and it complicates Brandon’s task when the man who killed her father, terrorist Max Huber, attacks her medical clinic in Guyana.  Now Brandon must team with Rachel’s longtime friend and protector, Catherine Ling, to keep her alive and out of the clutches of Max Huber as well as thwart his plans for a nuclear attack on the west coast.

The Ruin by Dervla McTiernan.  Twenty years ago, Cormac Reilly found the body of Hilaria Blake, dead of an apparent overdose and leaving behind two children.  Now one of those children, Jack, is found in the icy waters of the river Corrib and his death ruled a suicide.  When Jack’s sister Maude starts looking into the circumstances of her brother’s death, her opinion is that there was foul play involved and she is determined to prove it.  In an echo of the past, the detective assigned to the case is DI Cormac Reilly, tasked with looking into the ‘accidental’ death of Hilaria twenty years ago in addition to the death of Jack.  With pressure coming to charge Maude with murder, a newly found piece of evidence may exonerate or condemn the young woman.
