New On the Shelf

Dunbar by Edward St. Aubyn.  Henry Dunbar was once at the head of a powerful global corporation, and having built his empire planned to turn it over to his eldest daughters and enjoy the fruits of his labors in his golden years.  At least, that was the plan, but his daughters Abby and Megan soon turned the situation solely to their advantage and deposed Henry totally.  Cast from his business empire, Henry is exiled to a shabby care home in the Lake District, his only company an alcoholic comedian.  None of this sits well with Henry Dunbar, and he plans to fix his mistakes, fleeing to the hills.  Who will find him first, the daughters who stripped him of what was his, or his youngest daughter who cares for her father regardless of wealth or power.

Field of Bones by J.A. Jance.  Sheriff Joanna Brady is on maternity leave and her intention is to use every day of in and make the most of her time off.  However, the serial homicide case in Cochise County, her home turf, seems set to drag her into the case regardless.  Sheriff Brady should be at home with her newborn and going through the cold cases in her father’s diaries.  Now instead of enjoying her maternity leave she has to oversee an investigation covering multiple jurisdictions and try to keep things working as smoothly as possible.  While it may not be what she planned to be doing, or even what she wants to be doing, Sheriff Joanna Brady will do all within her power to catch the killer and protect her home.

Brief Answers to the Big Questions by Stephen Hawking.  A groundbreaking scientist known equally as well for his contributions to physics, cosmology, and a rather mischievous sense of humor, Stephen Hawking leaves as a final work his thoughts on some of humanity’s biggest questions.  How did the universe begin?  Is there intelligent life beyond our solar system?  Could artificial intelligence outsmart us or be a danger to us?  Known greatly due to his theoretical work, black holes, imaginary time, etc., Hawking believed that science was also key to solving problems closer to home, namely those posed to the planet Earth.  Stephen Hawking offers thoughts on topics from global warming and natural resources to the rise of artificial intelligence, answers from one of humanities greatest minds on the challenges we will all face.
