New On the Shelf

A Christmas by the Sea by Melody Carlson. The inheritance of a beachside cottage seems like just the windfall to clear off the debts that have been building up since her husband died.  There just happens to be the matter of renovating the neglected property before it can be sold, so Wendy and her son Jackson move in to the cottage to do the work themselves and perhaps save a little money since Christmas is just around the corner.  The charm of the town and the beauty of the property exerts an attraction on both Wendy and Jackson, enough that Jackson enrolls himself in the school system in a bid to convince his mother to stay.  Wendy keeps telling herself that the best thing to do would be to sell the cottage, but Seaside, Main just keeps looking more inviting than a return to their old life in Ohio.

Season of Wonder by RaeAnne Thayne.  Moving to the small town of Haven Point to start over seemed like the best idea to Dani Capelli, but her daughters aren’t making the adjustment too well.  Dani loves the small town atmosphere, her job working with Dr. Morales the town veterinarian, and her neighbor, Dr. Morales’s son Ruben.  The deputy sheriff is everything she wants if she could just let herself.  Ruben never considered falling for a big-city woman like Dani, but the heart wants what it wants.  Dani’s teenage daughter acting out gives Ruben the opportunity to show the Dani and her daughters some local traditions and hopefully that they all have a place in Haven Point.

Elevation by Stephen King.  Despite appearances, Scott Carey is losing weight.  He doesn’t look any different, and no matter what he is or isn’t wearing he weighs the same.  While trying to figure this out, Scott is also involved in a low-level battle with his neighbors about their dog doing his business on Scott’s lawn.  The women are also getting a significant amount of push back from the community about their status as a married couple, resulting in a bleak outlook for their restaurant.  Understanding the prejudices faced by his neighbors, including his own, leads Scott to try helping and encouraging others to do the same.  Unlikely alliances form, and bring out the best and the worst in the people of Castle Rock.
