New On the Shelf

Kingdom of the Blind by Louise Penny.  The letter inviting Armand Gamache to an abandoned farmhouse just outside of Three Pines was something of a surprise, but the reason for the invitation is a total shock.  Though he never met her, Armand has been named as the executor of an elderly woman’s will.  The bequests and conditions mentioned in the will seem like the product of a delusional mind, until a body turns up, then things start to make a menacing sort of sense.  Meanwhile, the investigation of the events leading to Armand’s suspension carries on slowly resulting in increasing desperation on Armand’s part.  In his drive to mitigate previous actions, Armand must confront his own blind spots and the horrors lurking within.

Hooks can be Deceiving by Betty Hechtman.  Playing host to the Craftee Channel’s new cable talk show “Creating with Crochet” seems like an easy way to get some good press for the bookstore and the Tarzana Hookers club.  However, Molly Pink’s enthusiasm for the project takes a hit when the show’s producer reveals that the host has massively overstated her crochet ability.  In addition, if dealing with the now necessary remedial crochet class wasn’t enough, Molly has the mysterious death of a new Tarzana Hookers member.  The victim, Marianne, and her roommate Connie weren’t the most social of people, but they are club members and Molly will always protect her own.  Between the bizarre circumstances of the death and the roommate’s brother actively keeping her from talking to the police, Molly has quite a few threads to unravel in this case.

The Allies: Churchill, Roosevelt, Stalin, and the Unlikely Alliance That Won World War II by Winston Groom.  Out of the 59 nations standing against the axis powers, three Allied leaders ended up controlling the war in the Pacific and in Europe –Churchill, Stalin, and Roosevelt.  Though hailing from quite different backgrounds, and rarely in full agreement, these three men came together to change the course of modern history.  Taking information from letters between the three world leaders, details from their personal lives, and accounts of battles fought, Groom builds remarkable profiles of the men who lead the Allies to victory.
