New On the Shelf

Before We Were Strangers by Brenda Novak.  At five years old, Sloane McBride shouldn’t have been used to being kept up with her parents’ fighting.  This autumn night, however, was different in that the argument ended with a thump and then silence the rest of the night.  The official story the next morning was that her mother had left and wouldn’t be coming back.  The “official story” didn’t work for Sloane when she was five and it still didn’t when she left home at eighteen.  However, even a fresh start half the country away couldn’t keep the fear and nightmares away, or the suspicion that her father wasn’t just a difficult man- he was deadly.  When fresh trauma forces Sloane to reexamine her past, she realizes that she will have to return to everything she left behind if she wants closure for herself and her mother.

You Don’t Own Me by Mary Higgins Clark & Alafair Burke.  Laurie Moran is happy and engaged to the former host of her show, Alex Buckley.  Together they’re planning a summer wedding and honeymoon, getting ready for Alex’s federal judicial appointment, and looking for a place in New York City to start their married life.  However, a shadow falls on Laurie when the parents of Dr. Martin Bell, who was murdered in his own driveway five years ago, with an eye towards featuring the case on her show “Under Suspicion”.  The prime suspect in the murder has always been the Martin’s wife Kendra, and her erratic behavior then and now hasn’t helped.  Looking deeper into the case, Laurie finds that Martin definitely wasn’t the picture-perfect husband he has been made out to be.  The more she looks, the more secrets Laurie finds, and the closer she comes to a dangerous final truth.

Late in the Day by Tessa Hadley.  The four of them have been close friends since their twenties, Alexandr and Christine and Zachary and Lydia.  That hasn’t changed even thirty years later when a distraught Lydia reaches out to Alex and Christine with shocking news, Zach is dead.  Zach was grounded, irreplaceable, and the core of their group.  Each of the remaining three feel the loss keenly in their own way, and to offer each other support Lydia moves in with Alex and Christine.  However, as the days pass old hurts come back to the surface and instead of comfort anger and bitterness rise in the old friends.
