New On the Shelf

The Boy by Tami Hoag.  The comfortable family home outside of Bayou Breaux, Louisiana was not the kind of place Detective Nick Fourcade would expect to find such a grisly and brutal crime scene.  The murder of seven-year-old P.J. Gauthier, by an alleged intruder, is indeed horrible and also perplexing since the mother, Genevieve, was in the house at the time and was left alive.  With no sign of forced entry and nothing to indicate motive, Nick is stumped.  When P.J.’s semi-regular babysitter, teen Nora Florette, is reported missing the next day, the town descends into fear fueled panic over the potential serial predator.  Pressured by the sheriff and media to quickly find answers, Nick and his wife Annie try to sift through Genevieve’s many relationships and her own troubled past to get to the heart of things.  Is she a victim or the perpetrator of these terrible crimes, and how far will Nick and Annie have to go for the truth?

The New Iberia Blues by James Lee Burke.  Happy stories aren’t the usual for Detective Dave Robicheaux, but one he remembers is that of Desmond Cormier, the young boy with dreams of being a Hollywood director.  When Robicheaux finds himself knocking on Cormier’s door twenty-five years later, it isn’t in congratulations for his award winning career, but rather with questions about the discovery of a young woman’s body.  Her disappearance near Cormier’s Cyrpemort Point estate leaves Robicheaux with questions for Cormier and his actor friend Antoine Butterworth, and while neither are talking, Dave knows better.  Searching for answers leads to a search for an escaped Texas convict, puts Dave and his friends in the crosshairs of the mob, and stirs up purposely forgotten ghosts from Robicheaux’s past.

The Introvert’s Complete Career Guide by Jane Finkle.  Achieving success in a modern workplace usually requires a certain amount of self-promotion, speaking up on one’s own behalf, and taking charge.  Essentially all qualities of extroverts, and usually rather difficult for an introvert to accomplish.  In this new handbook, Jane Finkle shows just how introverted qualities can be an advantage in the workplace, with a mere sprinkling of extroverted skills to finish things off.  Outlining the keys to navigating the stages of professional development, from self-assessment and job searching, to survival in a new position and career advancement Finkle lays it out in a simple and easy to follow manner.
