New on the Shelf

Polite Society by Mahesh Rao.  Beauty, brains, and boredom are a combination that keep Delhi wrapped around the finger of Ania Khurana.  After finding love for her spinster aunt, Ania decides to put her matchmaking powers to work for others.  Setting her sights on a match for Dimple, her sweet and dedicated but relatively poor friend, Ania is sure she can overcome any obstacle in the name of love.  However, her well-intentioned plans may be derailed by the arrival of her aunt’s handsome nephew, fresh from America.  Surrounded by old and new money, gossip, and scheming Ania must weather the changing social tides in Delhi.

The Secrets We Kept by Lara Prescott.  During the height of the Cold War, anyone working for the CIA could become an asset at a moment’s notice.  Sally and Irina find themselves recruited from the CIA typing pool for an incredible mission: to smuggle Doctor Zhivago out of the USSR to be printed and shared with the world.  Sally has a gift for deceit, which she has honed working across the globe, and Irina is just learning the trade at the side of a master.  From a country estate outside Moscow to the Gulag, Washington D.C. to Paris, two women will risk everything to bring one man’s magnum opus to the world.

How To: Absurd Scientific Advice for Common Real-World Problems by Randall Munroe.  How do you take ordinary tasks and turn them into bigger, yet more exciting problems?  With Science!  You can cross that river by simply boiling it, find new and exciting household uses for lava, and get out of ever being asked to help someone move again with experimental military research.  While most likely unhelpful for everyday tasks, How To takes a closer, and sometimes absurd, look at the science behind our everyday lives.  You may never need to know how to land a space shuttle in downtown LA or how to power your house on Mars, but it is ‘scientifically’ possible.
