New on the Shelf

Met Her Match by Jude Deveraux.  Terri Rayburn knows how small towns tend to work, with an unearned and unwanted reputation of her own; she knows the only way to deal with vicious gossip it to ignore it.  That is why she keeps her head down and gets along with running the summer resort on Lake Kissel.  Finding a strange man living in her house after a short trip, Terri suspects someone is out to fix her up.  However, the man in question, Nate Taggert, is already engaged to the mayors’ daughter and therefor off limits.  The initial awkward meeting soon turns to friendship, but Nate is confused by the rumors swirling around Terri, the gossip completely at odds with the woman he has come to know quite well.  Determined to find the underlying cause of this discrepancy, Nate searches for the truth but it may be more than either of them can bare.

Vanishing in the Haight by Max Tomlinson.  Colleen Hayes is doing all she can to put her life back together after getting out of prison.  Between avoiding the less than honorable advances of her parole officer and trying to make a living as a private investigator, Colleen is doing her best to reconnect with her teenage runaway daughter.  However, only one of these things pays the bills and a new case comes in from retired industrialist Edward Copeland.  Eleven years ago, Copeland’s daughter was murdered in Golden Gate Park, her murderer was never found and the case has gone stone cold.  Nearing the end of his life, Copeland is desperate to put the case and his daughter to rest and has placed his final hope onto Colleen.  Doing battle with her own demons, Colleen dive deep into the seedy underbelly of San Francisco where corruption is rampant and her quest for the truth soon turns deadly.

After the Fall: The Remarkable Comeback of Richard Nixon by Kasey S. Pipes.  The first and only U.S. president to resign from office, in order to avoid and almost certain impeachment, Richard Nixon looked to be headed to vilification and obscurity.  However, only a decade later Nixon was an advisor to presidents, had a hand in shaping foreign policy, and appeared to be every inch the elder statesman.  From the ashes of defeat, Nixon used his keen political mind, numerous connections to foreign leaders, and bedrock refusal to accept defeat to ascent back to the rarefied political heights he became used to.  With unprecedented access to post-presidential documents in the Nixon Library, Kasey S. Pipes lays out Nixon’s campaign to repair his reputation and bring life back to his career.
